REW 2018 agenda includes sustainable urban development

At the Clean Energy Ministerial in Ottawa in January 2018, representatives of the meeting’s sherpas discussed preparations for the International Mayors’ Summit on Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Growth in Cities, which will be held on 3–6 October during the ‘Russian Energy Week’ International Forum.

Along with South Korea, Russia became one of the leading countries for the initiative on energy efficiency and sustainable urban development in 2017. Not only some of the largest countries of the world, such as China, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, and South Africa, but also authoritative international organizations such as the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) joined the activities of the initiative. The initiative was also supported by more than 30 Russian cities.

Following the meeting of sherpas, India also joined the initiative.

The initiative was launched at the ‘Russian Energy Week’ International Forum in Moscow on 4–7 October 2017. Participants in the mayor summit discussed measures aimed at improving energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy sources, and the best practices of energy management in the urban environment.
