Anton Inyutsyn: the potential for energy saving in lighting is estimated at not less than 40%

Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Anton Inyutsyn spoke about the initiative of the Russian Ministry of Energy on prohibiting sale of incandescent lamps of over 50W.

Deputy Head of the Ministry of Energy pointed out that lighting accounts for about 13% of the total energy consumption in the country. “This is slightly below the global average of 15-17%, but still quite a lot – around 100 billion kWh per annum, and approximately a third of that is consumed by households”, Anton Inyutsyn noted.
According to him, the potential for energy saving in lighting is not less than 40%. “In money terms, this is somewhat above RUB 200 billion. Meanwhile, replacing incandescent lamps by LED lamps will allow savings of over RUB 70 billion”, the deputy head of the Ministry argued.

As Anton Inyutsyn explained, today’s incandescent lamps are inefficient sources of light: only about 5% of the consumed energy is spent on lighting and the rest is heat. LED lamps are 10 times more efficient.

The topic of energy saving and efficiency will be discussed as part of the International Mayors’ Summit on Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Growth in Cities.
