Russia–ASEAN Business Council Launches Collective Energy Security Platform for Russia and Southeast Asia

November 1, 2022

This was reported by Ivan Polyakov, Chairman of the Russia–ASEAN Business Council, at a meeting with Alexei Kulapin, Director General of the Russian Energy Agency (REA) of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation.

According to him, Russian fuel and energy companies have an opportunity to become a factor in the energy stability and security of ASEAN countries.

At present, the participation of Russian energy companies in fuel and energy projects in ASEAN countries is very limited. However, there are significant competencies that will enable domestic companies to participate both in oil and gas exploration and development and in major infrastructure projects, including LNG expansion, nuclear power, hydropower, and renewable energy. There is also a lot of scope for Russian designers and engineering companies to participate in ASEAN projects.

During the Russian Energy Week 2022 (REW 2022) Russia and ASEAN countries expressed the need to advance and expand energy, technological, and industrial cooperation and increase the supply of Russian energy resources to Asia Pacific. The issues of localization of Russian companies’ operations in the ASEAN countries were considered, which would enable with the Asian partners to jointly build a set of necessary works and promptly respond to customer requests.

The Russian Energy Agency and the ASEANRussia Business Council have planned practical steps to promote a platform for collective energy security in the Association’s countries, following talks on the margins of the REW 2022 International Forum. The next series of talks with potential partners will take place at the forthcoming ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on 910 November, right before the ASEAN Political Summit.

The 6th Russian Energy Week International Forum will be held on 11–13 October 2023 in Moscow. The venue will once again be the Manege Central Exhibition Hall. The Forum is organized by the Roscongress Foundation, the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation with support from the Government of Moscow.
