Black Gold of Russia Media Forum to Happen in October 2022

On 5–7 October 2022, in Kemerovo (Kuzbass, Russian Federation) the Open Regional Media Forum of Professional Skills among editors and journalists of mass media Black Gold of Russia 2022 will be held. The Media Forum is organized by the Government of the Kemerovo Region – Kuzbass and the Kuzbass Social Trusteeship Council with the support of the Roscongress Foundation, a branch of the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company State Television and Radio Company ‘Kuzbass’ (VGTRK Kuzbass), and the Kemerovo Regional Branch of the Union of Journalists of Russia (an All-Russia Public Organization). The Media Forum will focus on the environmental agenda and changes in export supply chains under sanctions, which will be discussed by global CEOs from 12–14 October 2022 at the anniversary Russian Energy Week Forum in Moscow.

The Black Gold of Russia Media Forum is a competition to assess the professional skills of editorial boards and journalists of the media in covering Russia’s coal industry. The event is designed to demonstrate the important role coal plays in the economic development of Russia’s regions and the global economy as a whole.

The Black Gold of Russia Media Forum was first held in 2017, the year of the 70th anniversary of Miner’s Day in the country. Over five years, over 70 regional and federal media outlets from 15 regions of Russia, covering the coal industry, took part in the event. This is the first journalistic competition that brought together representatives of television, radio, internet, and print media from all the country’s coal mining regions.

Understanding the importance of coal as one of the world’s three major energy sources, the Black Gold of Russia Media Forum is expected to feature Russian and foreign media representatives whose materials reflect the role of coal for the development of territories. The main topics addressed by the contestants are related to coverage of coal mining, processing and use, research and advanced technologies, training aspects and environmental issues.

“Despite the development of alternative energy sources, coal remains in demand as an energy carrier and plays an important role in the economic development of mining regions, creating jobs and developing areas and infrastructure. At a time when the entire media agenda is shaped around other energy sources, it is important to remind the public of the pressing issues of the coal industry, its role in the economy not only in Russia, but also in the world. Supporting and developing a regional platform to cover the coal industry in the new geopolitical situation is now more relevant than ever,” said Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation.

The media professionalism competition is held to support the coal industry. It is traditionally attended by Russian journalists. This year, for the first time, foreign media are invited to participate in three categories: TV, radio, and print media. The competition topics include coal mining and processing, the role of coal in the economy, R&D and innovations related to coal, addressing environmental issues in the coal industry, miners’ work, the role of coal companies in social life, and others.

The works must be published no earlier than 1 January 2020 and must be accompanied by a translation into Russian (audio dubbing or printed text). Works are accepted until 30 September 2022 by e-mail (mediaforum-kuzbass@mail.ru).
