The Heads of BRICS
National Standardization Bodies held a meeting in Moscow as part of the Russian
Energy Week International Forum 2024 at which they discussed effective forms
and areas of cooperation, as well as prospects for national standardization
bodies to collaborate in intensifying technological, industrial, and economic
cooperation among BRICS countries.
The meeting, which was
chaired by Russian Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology
Director Anton Shalayev, was attended by leaders and delegations from the
Brazilian National Standards Organization, the Bureau of Indian Standards, the
South African Bureau of Standards, the Chinese State Administration for Market
Regulation, the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, the Iran
National Standards Organization, the Egyptian Organization for Standardization
and Quality, and the Institute of Ethiopian Standards.
Secretary General of the
International Organization for Standardization Sergio Mujica and Secretary
General of the International Electrotechnical Commission Philippe Metzger noted
the importance of the meeting in video addresses. For his part, Member of the
Board (Minister) for Technical Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission
Valentin Tataritsky said in his welcome address that “technical progress is
impossible without standardization”.
“First of all, it’s
worth noting that the meeting of the heads of BRICS national standardization
and metrology bodies is taking place for the first time even though the member
countries have been engaging in a dialogue on the need for rapprochement in matters
concerning standardization since 2016. And this dialogue should become
permanent,” Shalayev said during the meeting.
The heads of BRICS standardization
bodies discussed key areas of cooperation, as well as prospects for their interaction
to intensify technological, industrial, and economic cooperation among BRICS
member states. Key issues include industry’s involvement in standardization
work, the harmonization of standards and approaches to digital transformation,
the introduction of green standards in the construction sector, and approaches
to conformity assessments and the standardization of artificial intelligence based
on the example of healthcare and agriculture.
The meeting participants
learned about Russia’s experience in developing a standard methodology to
assess commercial companies and rank them based on their level of reliability
and social and environmental responsibility in terms of achieving the UN
Sustainable Development Goals. This methodology can be used to conduct a clear
assessment of companies’ contributions to achieving national development goals
and identifying responsible businesses that are worthy of state support.
Russian Energy Week is
