Novovoronezhskaya Nuclear Plant Invests over 950 million Roubles in Protecting Environment

In 2017, Novovoronezhskaya nuclear plant, operated by Rosenergoatom (Electric Energy division of The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM) spent 950.098 roubles on environmental protection. This data was presented in a report on the plant’s environmental safety at the Nuclear Energy Information Centre in Voronezh.

“Radiation control of the Novovoronezhskaya power units, its buffer and observation area as well as the radiation safety indicators show that the plant in operation has no negative impact on the environment and the local population,” said Olga Rosnovskaya, head of the plant’s radiation control laboratory.

As mentioned in the presentation, the environmental situation around nuclear power plants is closely monitored by the nuclear sector and state supervisory authorities.

‘Many years of operation have shown that the environment around Novovoronezhskaya and within 30 kilometres around it is stable and safe,” said doctor Tatiana Sokolova, leading expert of Interregional Office No.33 of the Federal Biomedical Agency.

She added that all safety rules and requirements were complied with during the project and construction stages, which ensures the wellbeing of the population and environment.

In 2017, Novovoronezhskaya power plant won two awards. The plant staff received a certificate from the Vernadsky Non-governmental Environment Foundation for a great contribution to preserving the environment and an award for environmental protection from the Federal Service for the Supervision of Natural Resources.

The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM is a general partner of the Russian Energy Week which will start on the 3 October in Moscow and will be dedicated among other topics to the development of nuclear energy. During the program entitled ‘A Breakthrough Scenario for the Nuclear Energy Industry: Prospects for Global Energy’ participants will discuss the upcoming technological breakthrough in the sector, which will involve the development of new, fourth generation reactors, integration with heating systems and industrial manufacturing, solving the radioactive waste problem and other developments.

During a discussion on the role and development potential of nuclear energy in the world energy balance at the Russian Energy Week in 2017, ROSATOM Director General Alexey Likhachev noted that the generation of electricity accounts for up to 40% of the world greenhouse effect, but only 13% is due to nuclear plants.

“Our sector is a driver for the development of nuclear technology and competencies in the field. This is important not only for Russia and we actively promote our work and the nuclear agenda internationally. At the moment we see no alternative to developing the nuclear energy sector and as part of this world sector, we will do everything in our power to promote world integration, best practices and competences,” said Alexey Likhachev.
