The New Balance in the Russian Power Industry will be Discussed by Participants of REW 2022

October 7, 2022

As part of the business programme of the 5th Russian Energy Week International Forum, to be held from 12 to 14 October at the Manezh Central Exhibition Hall (Moscow), a session called ‘The Russian Electric Power Industry: Identifying Opportunities’ will be held.

In recent years, the Russian electricity sector has acted as a model of stability for investors through its transparent and long-term investment instruments and strategic documents defining its future for decades to come. Development programmes relate to the functioning of the fuel and energy sector as a whole and individual areas, such as the power grid complex, decarbonization and hydrogen power. Decisions have been taken to modernize thermal power plants in tariff zones, discussions are underway to extend market relations to the energy system of the Far East, and solutions on the development of nuclear power facilities are in the pipeline. However, recent events have forced certain adjustments, in terms of access to foreign technologies, opportunities to carry out generation repairs, and approaches to the implementation of the ESG agenda. Consequently, the issue of the Russian electricity sector’s target model comes to the fore.

What should be the balance between nuclear, hydro, thermal and renewable energy generation, what technologies should be prioritized? Will a new investment cycle be needed? Are the available investment instruments appropriate for the current situation? How can we prevent increasing the financial burden on the consumers? These and other questions will be answered by the session participants.

“The electric power industry has always been the backbone of the Russian economy. It is therefore essential in the current economic environment, which has certainly affected this sector, to identify further strategic steps that will, on the one hand, enable the domestic power industry to also actively develop and, on the other hand, preserve the availability of electricity to consumers. It must also not have a negative impact on the reliability of power supply. I am sure we will have a fascinating and challenging discussion, which, among other things, will outline the direction of changes to be made to the already existing industry development programmes,” says session moderator Maxim Bystrov, Chairman of the Board of the NP Market Council.

The Forum is organized by the Roscongress Foundation and the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, with the support of the Moscow City Government.
