The Global Energy Prize Laureates to be awarded at Russian Energy Week Forum in Moscow
The official Global Energy Prize Award ceremony will be held at 14:00 on 4 October during the Russian Energy Week International Forum. This year, the prestigious award will be given to scientists from Russia and Australia: Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergey Alekseenko and Professor Martin Green.
The laureates of the Global Energy Prize were determined at a meeting of the International Award Committee back in June 2018.
Sergey Alekseeenko, a representative of the Russian academic community, an Academician at the Russian Academy of Sciences, and an expert in thermophysics, energy, and energy conservation, works on creating modern energy and energy-saving technologies. His research has made it possible to design ecologically safe thermal power plants (by simulating gas, coal, and liquid fuels combustion processes) and is also used in the development of new types of burners and the thermal processing of solid waste for thermal energy generation, among other things.
Martin Green from Australia will receive the award for his analysis, development, and educational activities in photovoltaics. Sales of systems using PERC solar cells, which Green invented, topped USD 10 billion in 2017. According to forecasts, PERC components will help save about USD 750 million on energy production in Australia alone over the next decade.
According to Rodney John Allam (UK), the chairman of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee and a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, “It’s no coincidence that the International Award Committee selected the 2018 laureates from among 44 contenders from 14 countries. The developments made by Sergey Alekseenko and Martin Green are responses to the urgent problems facing the global energy sector, and they are unquestioned leaders in their respective areas. Recognizing such scientists, the Global Energy Prize helps to analyse world trends, which is important, because it is among the top 99 most prestigious and significant international awards (according to the data of the IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence) and is in the ‘mega-premium’ category in the prestige rating of the International Congress of Distinguished Awards (ICDA) – for noble purposes and exemplary practice”.
The Laureates of the Global Energy Prize are awarded RUB 39 million in 2018.
