Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation
Anton Kobyakov met with Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to
the Russian Federation U Lwin Oo in Moscow.
The two discussed the agreements that had been concluded
between the two countries during U Lwin Oo’s tenure as Ambassador and outlined potential
areas for further co-operation. Kobyakov spoke of the great personal contribution the
Ambassador had made to the development of relations between Russia and Myanmar,
also taking time during the meeting to congratulate U Lwin Oo on his
appointment to the high post of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar.
2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment
of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of the
Union of Myanmar, relations without which co-operation in areas of vital importance
to both nations would not have been possible.
“We value bilateral dialogue and the exchange of views
and recommendations concerning the events unfolding in the world, especially in
Southeast Asia. Our ties are developing positively in every respect, in
political and economic cooperation, in defense and security, and in humanitarian
activity among others. In this regard, it is important to note interaction
between the RC-Investments Foundation and the Ministry of Investment and
Foreign Economic Relations of Myanmar aimed at strengthening economic
cooperation and creating favorable conditions for business. A project office
will be established through the RC-Investments Foundation for this purpose,” Kobyakov
said.
In 2023, a
delegation from the Republic of the Union of Myanmar took part in the 8th
Eastern Economic Forum, and on the margins the RC-Investments Foundation made a
presentation on the important initiatives being implemented as part of the
agreements concluded. Examples include the establishment of a base plant for
liquid fertilizers and multiple compost fertilizer plants currently underway in
Myanmar, agreements on the development of pulp and paper industry projects, and
geological prospecting for gold, tin, and lithium deposits. Neither has the
international green agenda been neglected, finding its expression in the joint
construction of solar power plants in Myanmar.
Efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the
energy sector and implement joint projects will see a delegation from Myanmar
led by Union Ministers participate in Russian Energy Week in Moscow from 11–13
October 2023. The delegation will include Myanmar Union Minister for Electric
Power U Nyan Htun, Union Minister for Energy U Ko Ko Lwin and Union Minister
for Science and Technology U Myo Thein Kyaw, as well as representatives from
the country’s energy companies.
“We value Russia’s participation in the implementation
of joint projects and the invitation to such important forums as the St.
Petersburg Economic Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum. Special attention is
now being paid to the implementation of projects in the energy sector, and we
will continue to work together to this end,” U Lwin Oo said.
In addition to this, direct flights resumed this year between
Russia and Myanmar after a break of nearly 30 years, the importance of which
Kobyakov and U Lwin Oo touched on during their meeting, stating that it would
undoubtedly contribute to an increase in travel between the two countries and
increase ties in tourism and business across the board.
