Russia and Malaysia To Expand Cooperation in Energy Sector

Adviser to the Russian President Anton Kobyakov held a meeting in Moscow with a delegation from Maharani Energy Gateway led by the Malaysian oil and gas company’s Executive Chairman, Daing A Malek Daing A Rahaman.

The parties discussed prospects for cooperation between Russia and the Johor Sultanate in Malaysia, including joint projects in the energy sector. Kobyakov noted that Malaysia is one of Russia’s most important partners in Southeast Asia, particularly in the energy sector.

“We pay great attention to the development of relations with Malaysia and understand the importance of the Strait of Malacca as an alternative transport corridor for the supply of petroleum products,” Kobyakov said.

Rahaman spoke about the activities of Maharani Energy Gateway, including an energy hub that was created in 2021 and is one of the largest national projects in Malaysia. Maharani Energy Gateway’s hub is strategically located on the Strait of Malacca, the second most important oil crossing point after the Strait of Hormuz, through which an estimated more than 19 million barrels of oil pass daily.

For its partners and investors in Russia, the company offers modern solutions in the oil and gas and energy sectors, world-class infrastructure projects, as well as services for transhipment, placement on floating LNG terminals, fuel bunkering, ship handling, and more.

“We offer a favourable business and investment environment for economic growth, job creation, and new businesses that are regionally attractive, competitive, innovative, and responsive to global needs and demands. We strive to protect and preserve the physical and natural environment in which we operate,” Rahaman said. He said the company is currently creating a network of international offices in different countries and the Russian market is one of its key priorities.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad visited Russia in 2019. He attended the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Delegations from Malaysia have frequently travelled to Tatarstan. Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of the Republic of Tatarstan, has visited Malaysia, where he was received by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

During the meeting, Kobyakov invited Russia’s partners from Malaysia to take part in Russia’s largest business events: the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June and Russian Energy Week, which will be held in Moscow in October 2023.

“Our countries have great opportunities for cooperation in the trade, economic, military-technical, and humanitarian spheres, as well as in tourism,” Kobyakov said at the conclusion of the meeting.
