World Energy Council to present potential energy scenarios following COVID-19 in online conference

An online conference entitled ‘COVID-19: accelerating a better energy future for all’ is set to be held on 17 June 2020 at 11:00 (BST)/13:00 (GMT+3). The event will be held in a digital format and will be broadcast live on Russia 24 and Bloomberg Live Go (Bloomberg Terminal subscribers only). The conference will be the first in a series of online events as part of Road to Congress 2020. These events will take place biannually in the run up to the 25th World Energy Congress (to be held on 24–27 October 2022 in St. Petersburg).

The conference is organized by the Roscongress Foundation and the World Energy Council with the support of Global Energy Association and OJSC Rosseti.

The coronavirus pandemic has affected all sectors of the economy in varying degrees. Although energy companies are demonstrating their resilience to the crisis by ensuring that their customers have a continuous supply of energy, the crisis could still culminate in a ‘perfect storm’ – in other words, a fatal combination of circumstances that may lead to many companies in the energy sector going bankrupt. Participants in the discussion will consider the emerging pressure points in the global energy system, the current priorities of energy-producing states and energy companies in light of the crisis and the measures already taken to ease the energy system back into post-crisis normality.

Speaking at the conference will be Alexander Novak, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, and Dr Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General and CEO of the World Energy Council. The event will bring together top experts from the energy sector to discuss the increasing fragility of the global energy system along with the provision of support measures for fuel and energy companies aimed at ensuring that they successfully adapt to the changing energy climate and return to post-crisis normality. Other participants in the discussion will include Pavel Livinsky, Chairman of the Management Board and Director General of Rosseti; Helima Croft, Managing Director and Global Head of Commodity Strategy, Global Research, at RBC Capital Markets; and Dr Leonhard Birnbaum, Member of the Management Board at E.ON, CEO of Innogy and Chair of the Studies Committee of the World Energy Council. The discussion will be moderated by Sergey Brilev, President of Global Energy Association.

The event will be broadcast live on Russia 24 and Bloomberg Live Go (Bloomberg Terminal subscribers only). A live stream of the conference will be available on the 25th World Energy Congress website and on its dedicated YouTube channel. With media support ofEnergy Policy Magazine.
